Nennius, S.

S. Nennius (Nennidius), (28. Febr. al. 16., 17. u. 18. Jan.), Abt in Irland, stammte (Butler, engl. Ausg. I. 205) aus königlichem Geblüte. Er wollte aber von keinen Reichthümern wissen als von der Wissenschaft des Kreuzes Christi, nach deren Besitz allein er Verlangen trug, deren Geheimnisse er in sein Herz einschrieb. In diesem Geiste festigte ihn die Schule des hl. Fiechus, Erzbischofs von Leinster und die des Klosters Clonard (Meath). Nach beendigten Studien trennte er sich ganz von der Welt, indem er sich auf die Insel von Inis-Muighesamb im See von Erne, Provinz Ulster zurückzog Vorher empfahl er sich der Fürbitte im Gebete der hl. Brigida2, welcher er seine Ausdauer in gottseliger Buße zuschrieb. Da sich bald Schüler fanden, die unter seiner Leitung die christliche Vollkommenheit suchten, gründete er ein großes Kloster und gelangte zu so großem Ansehen, daß er zu den zwölf Aposteln Irlands gezählt wird. Er wird sonst auch am 16., 17. u. 18. Jan. genannt ( Febr. I. 130), von den Boll. aber als unsicher unter die Uebergangenen gestellt. Seine Verehrung unterliegt aber keinem Zweifel. (III. 717.)
