S. Aristarchus, M. (4. Aug.) Griech. Αρίσταρχος = der beste Fürst, Herrscher etc. – Vom hl. Aristarchus lesen wir im Mart. Rom., daß er ein Schüler und steter Begleiter des hl. Apostels Paulus gewesen, welcher in seinem Briefe an die Kolosser (4,10) schreibt: »Es grüßt euch Aristarch, mein Mitgefangener;« dann daß er vom hl. Paulus als Bischof von Thessalonich ordinirt worden und nach vielen Kämpfen unter Nero von Christus gekrönt entschlafen sei. Daß der hl. Aristarchus aus Thessalonich in Macedonien und ein Schüler und Begleiter des hl. Paulus war, ersehen wir aus Apstg. 19, 29; 20, 4; 27, 2; so wie er nach Kol. 4,10. in Rom die Gefangenschaft mit dem Apostel theilte, und von diesem im Briefe an Philemon V. 24 sein »Mitarbeiter« genannt wird; ob er aber vom hl. Paulus als Bischof von Thessalonich aufgestellt worden, ist nach der Bemerkung der Bollandisten nicht gewiß, sowie man aus dem Beisatze des Mart. Rom. über sein Ende nicht erkennen kann, ob er wirklich ein Martyrer gewesen, oder ob er in Frieden gestorben sei. Die Griechen halten ihn für einen Bischof von Thessalonich oder Apamea in Syrien, und glauben, er sei unter Nero enthauptet worden.
